The second key resource to keep in mind as you think through your program objectives and design is the Forum Standards. In 2010, after a period of open discussion, the deans’ designees decided to adopt the Standards for Good Practice for Education Abroad.
These standards were developed over 10 years of input with many universities, including MSU. For a large institution like MSU, offering over 260 programs through 18 colleges, the general guidelines and open-ended queries of the Forum Standards offer us a common language for program development and review.
Please review the 9 standards for education abroad as you develop the program:
For faculty-led programs, there is a specific set of Standards for Short-Term Study Abroad (PDF)*. Your program proposal will be reviewed with these standards in mind.
To assist institutions in reviewing study abroad programs, the Forum has developed a series of open-ended queries. MSU has set the university-wide goal of reviewing study abroad programs every 3-5 years they are offered. When your program is formally evaluated in the future, these standards and open-ended queries will inform the college review of your program, as well.
MSU has real strengths in the variety of approaches we use to offer learning experiences abroad to our students. The Forum Standards and queries will help us identify the high quality in our programming activities and provide effective guidance to faculty interested in developing more opportunities.
