Inge Steglitz, Assistant Director for Academic Relations
Brody Neighborhood
221 Brody Hall
MSU’s Collegiate Employment Research Institute conducts an annual survey of 6,000 employers and has found that the corporate sector in the U.S. does not rank study abroad experience very high in their recruitment criteria but does attribute significant value to the skills that student can acquire through strong education abroad experiences. However, few students are able to articulate what they have learned and what skills they have acquired as a result of such experiences. They are equally ill equipped to connect their international, on-campus and personal learning. Based on these observations, Gross, her colleague Phil Gardner, and Steglitz developed a distinctive pedagogy entitled "Unpacking Your Study Abroad Experience." Today's presentation provides relevant theoretical and research background and offers tools for how to help students connect skills gained on study abroad to their academic and professional development. We will also provide a live demonstration of unpacking a returned study abroad student. Participants will learn how to facilitate students' reflection on their learning abroad in terms of skills employers and graduate schools are looking for. Participants will also be invited to share efforts on their campuses to help students connect their experience abroad with their future employment or education goals.
