Helpful application information

Statement of interest

Explain why you want to study at MSU, discuss particular course preferences and how they fit with your academic and professional goals.

Proof of financial support

In order to meet visa requirements, you must show documentation of at least $14,500 ($6300 for exchange students) per semester in the form of a bank account in your name or your parents’ name. A copy can be provided with the application, but originals need to be sent to MSU in order for the visa documents to be processed. This should be done early in the application process so that the original DS-2019 visa form can be sent to you. The DS-2019 along with original proof of financial support is part of your visa application, which you will present to the US Embassy to apply for your J-1 student visa

TOEFL requirement

If you come from a non-English speaking country, you must provide a TOEFL test score. The American Semester requirement is a minimum of 92 IBT, 237 CBT, 580 PBT.

Home institution nomination letter

We need to confirm that you will be receiving credit at your home institution, or that your home institution approves your participation in the American Semester program. This letter/email can be from your academic advisor, study abroad or exchange program office, or university administration.

Residence hall application

Your American Semester advisor will liaise with the housing office on your behalf. American Semester participants are required to live on campus as it is very difficult to secure an apartment lease for less than one year.

Visa information

Most American Semester participants will study at MSU on a J-1 visa. MSU will issue you with a DS-2019 and it is your responsibility to apply to a U.S. Embassy or Consulate for your visa. It is important that you understand the responsibilities of international students in the U.S. in order to maintain your visa status.

At MSU, the Office of International Students and Scholars issues visa documentation and assists international students with visa matters. More information on your J-1 visa is available on OISS's webpageOpens in new window. If you have any questions, please contact American Semester asp@isp.msu.edu
