Sandy in Australia

Sandy Tupper coordinates study abroad programs in Australia, New Zealand, Japan, Malaysia, Thailand, South Korea and the Philippines at Michigan State University's Office of Study Abroad. In addition to assisting MSU students going abroad, Sandy also works with incoming two-way exchange students. She is from the Lansing area and received her BA in Social Sciences and MA in Student Affairs Administration from MSU.

Sandy began her work in the field of international education over eighteen years ago when she worked for Lansing Community College on the Japan Adventure and Japan Horizon Programs in Japan and then in the International Office in Lansing. She later worked on the Japan Exchange and Teaching (JET) Programme as a Coordinator for International Relations in a Japanese Government office in Kagawa Prefecture, Japan. Before coming to MSU eight years ago, she worked in Western Michigan University’s International Office.

Her first study abroad experience took her to Otsu, Japan for nine months and had a tremendous impact on her life. Sandy’s experience abroad had a strong influence on how she views the world around her. She was inspired to study abroad again, further her education, and work in the field of international education. The faculty she met became her mentors, helped her through graduate school, and assisted her in her career search. Additionally, many of Sandy’s close friends today are from her first study abroad experience. Studying abroad increased her self-confidence and provided her with a set of skills she continues to use each day. The language and cultural knowledge she obtained, in addition to intercultural skills, are some of the invaluable benefits Sandy gained from her study abroad experiences.
