Inge Steglitz is an assistant director in the Office of Study Abroad and is responsible for the coordination of the Freshman Seminars Abroad program, leadership for academic outreach initiatives and the management of a portfolio of programs in Europe. She also teaches both on and off-campus courses such as AL 200: Cultural Difference and Study Abroad (MSU’s first credit-bearing study abroad preparation course, co-taught with Elizabeth Plagwitz), Encountering Culture (on campus freshman seminar), Globalization, Culture and Identity (off campus freshman seminar in Ireland), and Unpacking your Study Abroad Experience (in collaboration with Career Services Network, designed to help students make connections between skills gained on study abroad and future employment).

As co-facilitator of an innovative faculty learning community on Teaching and Learning Abroad, Inge works with a group of academic colleagues to develop pre-departure, on-site, and reentry infrastructure and materials in support of students’ international and intercultural learning. In addition, she represents study abroad on the university-wide internationalizing the Student Experience team that has been charged with preparing and supporting MSU graduates as global citizens by identifying and promoting connections between curricular, co-curricular, and extra-curricular globally-focused opportunities.

Inge has contributed scholarly articles to several books on topics ranging from orientation programming and culture learning/teaching to assessing intercultural competencies. A member and regular conference contributor to NAFSA: Association of International Educators since the mid-1980s, Inge has held various national leadership positions in the organization.

A native of Heidelberg, Germany, Inge first came to the U.S. on a Fulbright and has now spent half of her life here. She earned her PhD in intercultural communication from the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities Campus, where she also worked in the Office of International Education and taught in the department of communication. Her dissertation research focused on conceptualizing and developing a model to assess the impact of education abroad on students' cognitive development and she continues to be interested in defining and assessing education abroad learning outcomes. She considers herself fortunate to have a professional career that is also a vocation.
