Cindy Felbeck Chalou currently serves as the associate director in the Office of Study Abroad and is responsible for the oversight of program development, coordination of programs in Africa and the Middle East, and services for underrepresented students.
Cindy has been active in international education organizations for over 20 years, including serving on the SECUSSA (Section on US Students Abroad) National Team, SECUSSA Region VII (Southeastern US) Team, SECUSSA Financial Aid Task Force, International Student Exchange Program (ISEP) Advisory Board, and Cultural Experiences Abroad (CEA) Board. She has published and presented at state, regional, national and international conferences on topics including study abroad in Africa; non-traditional student populations, particularly students with disabilities; transfer credit; consortia arrangements; safety, security, and international crises and critical incidents; financial aid; orientation; ethics; international internships; re-entry; program development; and collaboration with Title VI National Research Centers. She has also received five financial awards to assist with sending low income students and students with disabilities abroad.
Cindy earned a BS in Horticulture at Michigan State University and an MS in Horticulture at North Carolina State University. She studied abroad for the first time in 1976 as a sophomore at MSU and after completing her semester in London, joined her sisters for several months in Kenya and Lesotho. She fell in love with the continent of Africa and has been fortunate to work with African programs for the past 24 years. She has volunteered as an agricultural lecturer in the Peace Corps in Swaziland, 1980-82, and was later hired by Peace Corps to train agricultural development workers. She then served as the Director of Study Abroad at North Carolina State University for nearly 10 years and returned to MSU in 1995.
